Agricultural officials in Embu County, an eastern province of Kenya, have identified that cultivation of cotton and its value addition has immense potential to generate jobs and bring economic empowerment in the Mbeere region.

The agricultural officials, along with the region’s County Assembly Committee on agriculture, livestock, fisheries and cooperatives, also proposed plans to promote cultivation of the crop where more than 800 farmers grow cotton and revive collapsed ginneries in the area, reports Standard Digital News.

The officials were visiting the Kenfap Pionner Cotton Ginnery in Siakago town of the Mbeere district.

Dr Patrisio Njiru, County Agriculture Executive, said cotton crop best fits in the climatic conditions of Mbeere.

Mbeere has the capacity to produce 45,000 tons of cotton annually, if grown under the best husbandry methods, and the county agriculture committee plans to invest in cotton production especially by mobilizing farmers, he added.
