Australia's Cubbie Station to build Au$30mn cotton ginnery

Australia’s largest cotton farm, the Cubbie Station, has received approval for building an Au$ 30 million cotton ginnery on the farm located in Dirrabandi town in South West Queensland.

The 93,000 hectare farm was acquired by a foreign consortium led by Shandong Ruyi and Australian company Lempriere in January, 2013.

The stage one of the Au$ 30 million project would have a four-stand ginnery built at the property, but in the longer term the enterprise plans to extend the ginnery to eight stands, reports ABC Local.

The Cubbie-owned gin is expected to only process Cubbie cotton, but other producers in the Dirranbandi area have welcomed the move as it will create more space at the local ginneries for them to process their own cotton.

Earlier this year, the cotton farm located in the southern inland of Queensland was taken over by new owners CS Agriculture or Cubbie Ag, which is co-owned by Chinese textile group Shandong RuYi and Japanese trading company Itochu, along with Australian wool trader Lempriere Group in the ratio of 80:20.

Last season, Cubbie Station managed to harvest around 220,000 bales of cotton crop under the new ownership.
