The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has announced a new exhibition that explores three centuries of worldwide textile trade titled “Interwoven Globe: The Worldwide Textile Trade 1500-1600”, which is scheduled to open from September 16, 2013, at the museum’s Tisch Galleries.

According to a statement issued by the museum, the exhibition would feature fabric pieces from the museum’s collection which aims to highlight 300 years of how textiles and textile designs made their way across the globe during a period shaped by travel and international exchange.

The Interwoven Globe exhibition would feature 134 works, about two-thirds of which are drawn from the Metropolitan Museum’s own rich, encyclopedic collection, while the others are augmented through domestic and international loans from various museums.

The exhibit would display numerous flat textiles including lengths of fabric, curtains, wall hangings, bedcovers, and tapestries, costumes, church vestments, and pieces of seating furniture—all trying to depict the worldwide textile designs beginning from the 16th century to the early 19th century.

The exhibition, which would run till January 5, 2014, is divided into ten galleries, organized by geography and themes, depicting the textile and textile designs that made their way throughout the globe, from India and Asia to Europe to the East, and eventually West to the American colonies.
