Chinese company Jin Baohua Carpets has manufactured the largest one-piece rug ever made by using more than 3000 kg of New Zealand wool. The giant rug covers 1018 sq m, and was made by a team of 100 workers who took two months to finish it.

The company manufactured the rug for Beijing's new International Convention Centre and it will be one of the showpieces for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation annual conference in Beijing late next year.

The hand-tufted rug needed wool from as many as 1000 sheep and was created without joints and transported and installed as one complete piece.

Stephen Tan, the manager of Wools of New Zealand’s Beijing office said the rug showcases a traditional cultural background, giving expression to human peace and harmonious development, and New Zealand wool was the obvious choice, given its quality characteristics and consistency, making it perfect for deep dyeing and vibrant color display, reports Scoop.co.nz.

Jin Baohua Carpets has applied for a world record in the Guinness Book of Records for creating the one-piece rug. The firm also holds the existing record for a 729 sq m rug the company manufactured in May 2009 which was also hand woven using New Zealand wool.
