China's cotton yield expected to decline this year
Oct '13
Cotton market is in doldrums since last year affecting the enthusiasm of farmers, and hence China’s cotton yield is expected to decline this year, Yu Xiang, Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, has said.
According to him, this year’s cotton acreage is less than last year and cotton production is expected to be around 6.315 million tons, which would be 337,000 tons less than last year.
Speaking at a meeting organized by the China Cotton Association and the National Executive Council to analyze the situation of cotton in Beijing, Secretary Xiang Yu said in addition to reduction in area under cotton, the main disadvantage of cotton production is climate.
Early sowing of cotton and continuous high temperature in July and August impacted this year’s cotton yield, according to Yu.
Du Min, Agricultural Research Centre Director in the Ministry of Agriculture, said there are two points that require special attention from market outlook. First, although relevant indicators have recently improved for some countries, there is still a lot of uncertainty in international market.
Secondly, despite an increase in domestic industrial indicators, the operating rate of the textile industry in not very optimistic. In addition, the industry has to grapple with last year’s inventory pressure and price increase pressure. However, Du Min termed domestic demand outlook as cautiously optimistic.
