The prices of benzene showed downward trend in global markets last fortnight ending September 30, 2013.

In the Far East and Southeast Asian markets, average benzene prices during the fortnight ending September 15 were in the range of US$ 1295-1325/ton, which declined by around 1 percent to US$ 1285-1305/ton during the last fortnight ending September 30, due to sluggish demand from the downstream buyers coupled with the weak upstream energy value.  The declining trend continued in the first week of October, and prices were assessed at US$ 1275-1285/ton on October 5.

In Europe, weak upstream crude oil value and ample product availability in the region drove benzene prices downward by 3 percent to US$ 1280/ton in the fortnight ending September 30, compared to average prices of US$ 1320/ton in the fortnight ending September 15.

In the US, too, benzene prices showed similar trend due to weak demand from downstream industries. Benzene prices were 450 cents/gallon during fortnight ending September 15, which dropped by 2.86 percent to 435 cents/gallon in the fortnight ending September 30.
