Spanish textile industry turnover dips 7.1% in Aug'13

The turnover of Spanish textile and apparel sectors decreased 7.1 percent year-on-year in August 2013, as per the Industrial Turnover Indices (ITI) data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The New Orders Index (IEP) for textiles also declined by 7.1 percent during the month compared to the same period in 2012.

However, the decline of ITE recorded in the textile industry is comparatively lower to the overall Spanish industry, which registered a 9.6 percent decrease in ITE during the month of August, compared to the same period last year.

Sub-sector wise, the ITE in manufacturing of knitted fabrics, carpets, rope, nonwoven fabrics, textile products for technical and industrial use and other textile products, plunged 5.8 percent year-on-year in August, whereas the ITE in preparation and spinning of textile fibers, and manufacture of woven textiles, textile finishing, registered a decline of 9.7 percent year-on-year.

The highest decrease in ITE was recorded in the manufacturing of garment sector, which dipped 19.5 percent in the month of August, compared to the same month in 2012.

Meanwhile, in terms of IEP, the manufacturing of garment sector incurred a decline of 11.5 percent year-on-year, whereas the IEP in manufacturing of knitted fabrics, carpets, rope, nonwoven fabrics, textile products for technical and industrial use and other textile products, decreased by a meager 1.8 percent year-on-year, in the month of August, 2013.

The highest decline in IEP was recorded in the preparation and spinning of textile fibers, and manufacture of woven textiles, textile finishing sector, which registered 16.4 percent decline in the month of August, compared to the same period last year.
