China needs to promote mechanization of cotton harvesting

China’s cotton production is still relatively backward and there is need to further promote mechanical harvesting of cotton, according to experts from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

According to experts, about 30 percent of the world’s cotton is picked by machines, but China’s cotton production is still relatively backward.

At present, China’s cotton production labor costs amount to more than 1,000 yuan per mu (1 mu=0.067 hectares), accounting for over 50 percent of total cost of production.

The high cost of human input limits China’s comparative effectiveness in cotton and there is a need to promote the development of mechanized cotton harvesting, experts said.

In recent months, small and medium size companies in China have introduced new cotton harvesting machinery, reducing dependence on imports for such machines.

The cost of new machines is much lower than the imported machines. These machines help complete the harvesting process with ease, while greatly saving manpower costs.
