China to have ramie textile quality inspection centre

China’s first national ramie textile quality inspection centre would come up in Hubei province’s Xianning city, as the city’s Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau has last month approved the setting up of the quality inspection centre.

Xianning is one of the bases for ramie textile industry, which for many years was identified as the province’s key growth industry cluster.

Xianning city accounts for one-half of China’s short-spinning ramie, 10 percent of long-spinning ramie cotton blended yarn, and one-third of all China’s ramie textile production.

The Ramie Textile Products Quality Inspection Centre would be built in Xianning City Economic Development Zone, and upon completion, the centre would start inspection and testing, training, consulting, research and innovation, revision of standards, certification services and other five major functions.

The centre is expected to further consolidate Xianning’s position as ramie textile production base in China.

Ramie is one of the oldest fiber crops, having been used for at least six thousand years, and is principally used for fabric production. Ramie has been around for so long that it was even used in mummy cloths in Egypt during the period 5000–3300 BC and has been grown in China for many centuries.

Ramie is similar to linen in absorbency, density and microscopic appearance, and is used as a blend with other fibers such as cotton or wool. It is used to make industrial sewing thread, filter fabrics, and fabrics for household furnishings and clothing.

China leads in the production of ramie and exports mainly to Japan and Europe.
