Owing to the rising demand from emerging markets like Africa, China and Latin America, the carpet exports from India increased 10.23 percent during the first half of the 2013-14 fiscal year, as per the data released by Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) of the country.

According to the CEPC statistics, the country exported US$ 530 million worth of carpets during the period of April to September this year.

In September itself the country exported US$ 73.5 million worth of carpets, which is a 5 percent increase compared to the US$ 69.98 million worth of carpets exported during the same month last year.

Categorically, India’s export of handmade woollen tufted carpets grew 4.9 percent during September 2013, while handmade synthetic carpets and handmade silk carpets posted a growth of 5 percent and 23 percent, respectively.

According to CEPC, besides the increasing demand from emerging markets, demand from the US market is also on a rise. However, the demand from the European Union (EU) market is still to perk up.

Traditionally, over 60 percent of India’s overall carpet exports are destined towards the EU and the US.

Employing over one million people, the Indian carpet industry earned around US$ 1.07 billion in exports during the last fiscal.
