'Argentina's textile exports to decline by end of 2013'

The Argentine textile industry, by the end of this year, will register an increase in investments but a decline in exports, said the executive director of the Foundation of Weaving (PRO KNIT) of Argentina, Ariel Schale, at the recently held annual convention of textile and clothing industry of the country, PRO TEXTILE 2013.

According to a statement issued by PRO KNIT, the director said textile industry of the country has been facing tough times with negative activity in terms of exports, as between January to September 2013, textile exports from Argentina declined by 2.3 percent year-on-year.

The largest fall in exports during the first nine months of this year was registered in the raw materials segment, the main product exported from the sector in the country, which dipped by 15.4 percent year-on-year, he added.

During the convention, Marco Meloni, president of PRO KNIT, advocated the need to establish an administration to remove the ‘slave labor’ that prevails in the textiles sector of the country. The PRO KNIT president also urged the need to increase the wage rate of textile and garment industry workers in the country.

Argentina requires a foreign trade administration increasingly effective in developing the domestic industry and help firms operating in the sector to combat the increasing competition from international markets, he added.

The 9th edition of the annual PRO TEXTILE convention, organized by PRO KNIT, is considered to be one of the most important gatherings of the textile industry in order to promote textile and clothing production activities. Over 1,500 industry experts from the textile and apparel sector of the country participated in the event to discuss issues regarding the sector’s development.
