Deputy Minister of Tourism, Jose Miguel Gammara, who was on a visit to New York for a technical mission to promote Peruvian alpaca garments and Pima cotton, said that he met with US importers and sellers who were interested in using Peruvian products in their collections, reports Peruvian news agency andina.

During the meeting at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, many representatives from the design and fashion industries in the city showed interest in coming to Peruvian city of Arequipa to understand the process of manufacturing alpaca garments, he added.

Mr. Gammara said that MINCETUR is looking for ways to introduce alpaca-made garments in the US market, and the idea is to expand the network of people related to the fashion industry so that they can work directly with alpaca producing communities in Peru.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism also expressed hope that in a short term an agreement would be signed between FIT and Peruvian Government for a student exchange program, wherein design students from Peru could be trained at FIT.

The Minister who was on a technical mission to New York also attended the ‘Alta Moda’ exhibition of renowned Peruvian fashion photographer Mario Testino at the Queen Sophia Spanish Institute in New York, which showcases a photographic memoir of costumes made from alpaca fibers worn by indigenous communities in Peru.
