Chief Minister (CM) of the Indian state of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, is all set to work with 400 weavers and designers in the state to design sarees in a bid to revive the ailing ‘Tantuja’ saree brand of the West Bengal State Handloom Cooperative Society, once a popular handloom saree brand of the state.

The West Bengal state textile department held its first round of meetings with designers and weavers in order to discuss the process of taking the project ahead, reports Economic Times quoting PTI.

Swapan Debnath, minister of State for Micro and Small Scale Enterprises and Textiles, said the CM would be interacting with these weavers coming from primary weavers’ cooperatives and would talk about the designs and the use of vegetable and non-chemical dyes for manufacturing these sarees.

A state handloom design center has been set up recently where the 400 weavers from across West Bengal would be working together for the project, he added. The design center has also been sanctioned a grant of Rs 20 million for the project.

The state government has undertaken the plan to revive ‘Tantuja’ to keep alive the hopes of 7,000 weavers representing 488 cooperatives under the West Bengal Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society, who make these sarees.
