The award was presented at the 2014 AATCC International Conference in Asheville, NC, on April 3, 2014.

Varley was recognized for his contribution toward the development of the Fiber ID Technical Supplement and for almost yearly additions or revisions to Test Methods TM 20 and TM 20A in an effort to make those the most complete test methods in the world.
