According to a statement issued by UHKIB, Mr. Sankaya was speaking after being re-elected as president during the recently held General Assembly of UHKIB.
During the assembly Mr. Sankaya said that in the past ten years, the textile and clothing industry of the country, especially the clothing sector, has contributed significantly towards growth of the Turkish economy and the industry would continue to do so, if entrepreneurs operating in the sector cooperate fully.
According to the UHKIB official, the crisis prevailing in Europe has had a positive impact on the industry, with more and more demand for Turkish textiles and garments in the international market, which has led to the rapid growth of the sector.
Turkey’s apparel exports touched US$ 17.4 billion last year, recording a rise of 8.3 percent year-on-year, whereas the textile exports totaled $8.39 billion during 2013, registering an increase of 7 percent year-on-year, which indicates that both the textile and apparel sector exports are experiencing significant growth, he added.
Mr. Sankaya said that with the cooperation of textile and garment sector entrepreneurs, both the sectors are expected to perform extremely well during the current year, and both textile as well as the clothing industry observed a good start with exports totaling $2.25 billion and $4.68 billion, respectively, during the first three months of 2014.
