According to the 8th field survey on crops for the 2013/14 harvest season conducted by CONAB, the volume of production of cotton in the country is expected to surge by 26 percent, indicating that Brazil’s cotton production would reach 1.65 million tons during the current harvest season.
As per the survey, the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso is estimated to produce around 56 percent of the national cotton production during the current harvest season of 2013/2014. The Brazilian state is expected to harvest 925,200 tons of cotton this season.
The state of Bahia is in second place in terms of cotton production in the country during the current harvest period, and is estimated to produce 30 percent of the national harvest, which is 494,200 tons.
Cotton production totaled 1.3 million tons for the harvest period of 2012-13, which was 31.8 percent lower than the 2011-12 harvest period. The area planted for cotton during the period was 894,000 hectares which was 35.9 percent less compared to 2011-12 season. However, cotton yield during 2012-13 was 1,444 kilos per hectare, which was an increase of 6.3 percent year-on-year.
