Angola plans to harvest 100,000 tons of cotton per year

Angola, a country in southern Africa, is planning to harvest 100,000 tons of cotton per year through its cotton revival program which covers 500,000 farmers, Adelino Rodrigues, National Director of Agriculture and Livestock has said.
 
Speaking on “Private sector in large agricultural projects” to the Angolan news agency ANGOP, the official said cotton cultivation would be taken up on 70,000 acres of land under the National Development Plan 2013-17.
 
The Angolan Government has developed a comprehensive program for revival of the textile industry in the country, Mr. Rodrigues said.
 
He further informed that cotton is presently produced in Kwanza Sul and Malanje provinces, whereas certain organizational actions are being taken in other provinces for cultivating cotton.
 
According to Mr. Rodrigues, it is important to invest in the production of domestic raw materials, particularly cotton cultivation, to ensure efficient functioning of the textile industries in the country.
 
There are two textile factories in Angola—one in the municipality of Cazenga (Textangue dois) and another in Benguela.
 
The Ministry of Industry, in partnership with the portfolios of Agriculture and Economics, has been entrusted by the Angolan Government to oversee the cotton revival program.
 
Meanwhile, the modernization of the defunct AfricaTextil being carried out at a cost of US$ 480 million, through finance by the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), is nearing completion. However, the textile mill would initially import cotton as sufficient quantity of raw cotton is not grown in Angola.
