Kalaty gives tips to define interior design with area rugs

Kalaty Rug Corporation, a family-owned, handmade area rug company, believes that area rugs serve a dual purpose: to define space and enhance décor within a room.

“Area rugs can be the piece within a room that completely change the look and feel by tying together the wall color, wall hangings, throw pillows and furniture,” said Kamran Kalaty, specialist at the company. “But this harmony does not come from simply throwing a rug on the floor; you must strategically place it.”

Kalaty explains how to transform the interior design of common rooms within a home with area rugs:
Master Bedroom:
Depending on the shape of the room, typically it is best to have an area rug that anchors the bed within the room. Run the area rug underneath the bed, stretching it perpendicularly across the lower two-thirds of the bed. Make sure that the rug includes a color that is found in another element of the room. Also, the rug should be wide enough that when a person leaves the bed their feet hit the rug.

Living Room:
The area rug should be large enough to place the feet of the furniture on the outer perimeters of the rug. This creates an illusion for the homeowner that the rug extends indefinitely.

Area rugs are not meant to sit only under coffee tables or be a floor mat for when getting out of bed. Using a rug that is too small with make the room will feel smaller instead of larger and the area rug will not define the space.

Bathroom:
An area rug is essential in a bathroom to insulate the space and keep sound from echoing against the tile flooring. Coordinate the area rug with the shower curtain and décor within the bathroom to bring the room together.

Kitchen:
If planning to put an area rug in a kitchen, make sure to select something that is durable and complements the countertops. For safety, we would choose a thin rug with a rug pad to prevent tripping.

Child Bedroom:
Often children sleep on twin-sized beds and want their bed against the wall to prevent them from rolling out of bed. If the bed is against the wall, place the area rug beside the bed with the rug underneath the feet of the bed to extend the rug. By having an area rug at the open side of the bed, it will help protect the child by providing a cushion should they fall off of the bed.
