Government has approved licenses for twenty enterprises, allowing them to purchase cotton from Mwanza Region. However, three firms were denied permission.

Agricultural Advisor in the Regional Secretariat, Ndalo Kulwijila explained that the Simon Agency, Nsagali and Kahama Oil Mill were not allowed to buy cotton from Mwanza as they owed large sums of money to Secretary of the Private Schools Board in outstanding education levy.

Meanwhile, Nyanza Cooperative Union (1984) Limited (NCU), which was denied license, last year, considering its outstanding payments of TZS8.4 million, has been given permission for buying cotton throughout the Region, this season. Reportedly, now the Union owes several institutions and organizations of the district over TZS60 million.

These licenses were issued for the purchase of 2006 season cotton, which will be on market within around next two weeks.

Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Dr James Msekela, warned cotton traders that if they try to stifle farmers, they would further endanger cultivation of the crop.

Experts advised that the buyers make appropriate payments to the growers so that it is mutually beneficial and promote future cotton business.
