Ms Kiriyo Kuchina, master craftsman of Kiriyo Ori, an art based on a traditional Japanese weaving form called Saga Nishiki, will be showcasing her work from January 19 to 24, at The Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong. The exhibition is initiated by Brunei Japan Friendship Association (BJFA) for honouring and appreciating her contribution to this field.
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and White House Library have already been adorned by the awe-inspiring works of Ms Kuchina. Now even the common man can witness her collection as the exhibition is open to the public.
Tradition says that Saga Nishiki was created at the end of the Edo Era by the wife of a feudal lord in Saga city, on the southern island of Kyushu, Japan more than 300 years ago.
Saga Nishiki has evolved into a form that uses durable Japanese paper coated with gold and silver as the warp and silk threads as the weft. The craft was handed down to descendants by aristocrats and other prominent women, after the Edo Period.
