Reports from China Cotton Association show that country's cotton shortage is likely to grow in next few years. It is expected to reach 17 million tons in domestic market by 2010.

The demand for raw cotton has seen a rapid growth, due to expansion of cotton yarn production. In the past five years, cotton yarn output has achieved a growth rate of 20 percent per annum and it is forecasted to reach 36 million tons by 2010.

If this situation were prevails, country's cotton yarn manufacturers would consume 24 million tons of raw cotton, 7 million tons higher than forecasted cotton production by 2010.

According to an official from China Cotton Association, about 70 percent of domestic cotton consumption will be met through imports by the year of 2010.

In 2008, cotton yarn production will grow 1.5 million tons to over 20 million tons and the sector will consume 13 million tons of raw cotton.
