Barbados Cotton Growers Association (BCGA) recently announced that harvesting of this year's cotton crop was currently underway.

In terms of this year's projected yields, Mr. Oliver Agard, said it should be in excess of 250,000 lbs, with the harvest expected to be concluded by the end of April.

Cotton is currently grown on some 16 farms across the island and now, the Association is set to recruit as many as 800 cotton pickers.

“With the cost of living as it is, unemployed persons, youth groups, clubs or anyone really, can take the opportunity to earn some extra income. Persons who were employed in last year's harvest demonstrated that substantial wages can be earned while participating in this exercise. We can accommodate them and can also provide transportation, so it is a great opportunity,” Mr. Agard observed.

It has also been announced that the pickers will be paid at the rate of $1.50 per pound, and will also receive an incentive for every pound of cotton picked at the end of the harvest. The top three overall pickers will also be awarded a monetary prize.

Complete harvesting information may be found at BCGA.
