Fibre imports from SE Asian region likely to grow

A report from General Department of Customs shows that in 2007, Vietnamese textile and garment industry imported 425 thousand tons of fibre of all types, worth US $744 million, representing year–on–year rise of 25.4 and 36.8 percent.

Taiwan topped the list of biggest suppliers of fibre in 2007, totaling to 198.6 thousand tons for $312.5 million, posting a surge of 16.1 and 26.1 percent, respectively, in comparison with 2006.

Chinese enterprises stood second with 47.1 thousand tons valued $100.1 million, up by 41.3 and 39.6 percent, respectively, over previous year.

Another country which emerged as strong fibre supplier is Thailand, with whom Vietnam inked large number of contracts, especially due to its competitive price. A total 63.1 thousand tons at $98.4 million were imported from Thailand, with year–on–year rise of 64.6 and 79.8 percent.

Besides, the imports of fibre from Korea, Indonesia and India saw growth of 5.8, 33 and 52.3 percent, respectively, in comparison with 2006.

Further, experts forecast that imports from such South East Asian country will see more growth in 2008.
