'Day of Ideas' at Hohenstein institutes

The Hohenstein Institutes welcomed over 1500 visitors at their 'Day of Ideas'. In honour of the Institute becoming a 'Selected Place in the Land of Ideas', anyone who was interested was allowed to peep over the shoulders of Hohenstein employees working in the 'glass laboratories' of the Institute for Hygiene and Biotechnology (IHB) and the recently opened Josef Kurz Building.

Head of the Institute Dr. Stefan Mecheels stressed the uniqueness of the occasion: “As an accredited test institute, we never normally have the opportunity to show groups of visitors round the building.

The 'Day of Ideas' was therefore the only opportunity for the foreseeable future for local residents, family members and friends and acquaintances of employees, and some school groups too, to observe our work at close quarters.“

It was specifically the work of the Institute for Hygiene and Biotechnology that was recognised by the nomination as a 'Selected Place in the Land of Ideas' for 2008. It was therefore those areas of work which formed the main focus for the Day of Ideas.

The subject of hygiene was the main theme of the recently initiated Hohenstein competition for schools, called `Close contact science´.

13 working groups from four schools in the district of Ludwigsburg gave presentations of their entries for the competition to a panel of experts and interested members of the public.

The young researchers had investigated various aspects of hygiene in everyday life. The three winning groups were pleased to win cash prizes of 1,000, 750 und 500 euros:
