Although Iran is renowned for exporting carpets to various nations around the world, the industry is making losses. According to the Customs data, last fiscal, that ended on March 20, 2008, the country fetched a mere US $440 million from the exports of carpets, observing a decline of 12 percent.

Till March 20, 2007 the total export revenue had come around $500 million, but this plunge, has brought worry among the people who are associated with carpet industry.

During the ongoing international carpet exhibition in Kish, Morteza Faraji, Head of National Carpet Center Iran, showed his concern over the decrease in demand from global buyers and urged everyone related to this sector to make efforts to revive it.

The Government wants to minimize the losses and it is coming up with series of reforms to aid the sector, it is also planning to bring some changes in export process.

Many Iranian people earn their living through working in carpet sector, but if export orders continue to drop then it is possible that artisans will shift to other fields for making money.

Experts believe that, rising prices of raw material, disturbance in the economy of US and cheap imitation of Iranian carpets are some of the reasons that have led to reduction in exports.
