Cotton output of Xinjiang to remain stable in 2008

According to Xinjiang Bureau of Statistics, last year total cotton area cultivated was around 1.7826 million hectares, a rise of 7.1 percent from 2006. Cotton output reached nearly 2.9 million tons last year, an increase of 8.4 percent from the previous year.

Annual yarn output was nearly 3,87,500 tons, a growth of 15.2 percent compared with the output of 2,88,800 tons in 2006.

According to statistics till last month, cotton sown area accounted for nearly 55.3 percent of the total expected planting. Of which, direct planting area accounted for 28.0 percent, seedbeds transplanting accounted for of 27.3 percent.

Affected by extreme weather conditions in winters including low temperature, the cotton plantation got slight delayed. Meanwhile planting progress has been slow, seedling emergence has delayed, as a result germination rate is only 85 percent.

In addition to this, the strong cold wave along with heavy rains for a long time has brought relief in drought hit North China. Although, this rain will be beneficial to the plantations, it also has an adverse impact, as excess of rain can damage the seeds and cotton-plants in cotton areas of Yangtze and Yellow River reaches.
