Crude oil imports for April surge despite high Intl prices

Despite prices standing at US $127 per barrel, crude oil imports of India saw a marginal growth to touch 11.04 million tons in April driven by a 6.3 percent increase in consumption due to high diesel demand.

This was against 10.99 million tons imported in the previous month. This apart, petroleum product demand surged by 11.241 million tons against 10.571 million tons recorded in April last year.

Again, Diesel demand grew by 13.1 percent to 4.49 million tons while LPG and petrol consumption also registered a growth of 995,900 tons and 942,000 tons respectively.

Petroleum product imports of India mounted by 53 percent to 2.23 million tons with figures for diesel touching to 666,000 tons and naphtha, 557,800 tons.

In contrast to the ever increasing imports, exports plunged by 3.5 percent to 2.671 million tons. Naphtha in particular, witnessed a dip of 27.6 percent to 569,400 tons.
