Low cotton productivity intensifies imports

Cotton production in Vietnam for the season 2007-08 saw a dramatic drop because of a decline in sowing area (acreage) and low productivity. Total yield for the year only touched a mere 5,880 metric ton, plummeting by 44.3 percent than the year before.

This has created a shortage of raw cotton in the domestic market forcing textile and apparel industry exporters to rely on imports for meeting their local demand.

In the first nine months of the season starting from August 2007 to April 2008, the industry imported some 178,150 metric tons of cotton representing a year on year rise of 10 percent.

Experts have estimated that in the entire season of this year, textile industry of Vietnam is likely to import about 240,000 metric tons of cotton.

It is quite evident that if this trend continues, the country's is likely to enter into a trade deficit with enlarging imports of cotton.
