A bird's view of the textile & garment industry

The sixth largest textile producer in the world, the textile and garment industry of Brazil had registered revenues of US$ 34.6 billion in 2007, corresponding to 3.5 per cent of the GDP. This figure represents an increase of almost 5 per cent compared to the previous year. Exports correspond to US $ 2.4 billion

Investments in machinery, equipment, technology, design and research have ranged around US$ 1 billion per year.

The 30,000 odd Brazilian companies that compromise the sector employ 1.65 million persons. The textile industry is the second largest employer of the economy.

The State of Santa Catarina alone has 7,241 textile companies employing around 280 thousand employees. It is one of the main textile hubs of the Brazilian textile industry and is home to the major manufacturer's home textiles, knitted fabrics and garments.

Instituto de Estudos e Marketing Industrial (Industrial Studies and Marketing Institute) has carried out a study on the industry across Brazil. The industry as whole compromises of
