The Gujarat Government has finally come to rescue local farmers who were unable to buy Bt cotton seeds owing to skyrocketing prices. However, the companies and suppliers who were previously charging usurious rates will be punished if found guilty as the authorities have fixed the rates.

Now the price of Bollgard-I is Rs 650 and Bollgard-II is Rs 750 per packet. This action is expected to bring some relief to the farmers who had made several complaints regarding the injustice done to them by distributors.

The Government had previously asked manufacturers to cut down rates of Bollgard-I and II, but the negligence on their part had forced officials to cap prices. This time the suppliers and companies who are found violating the act, will be imprisoned for three years and will have to pay Rs 5000 as penalty.

Many farmers in Gujarat are opting for growing Bt cotton as the returns are extremely good. The rise in demand had prompted many manufacturing units and distributors to increase the prices for earning big bucks in short span of time.
