Northwest of Lubbock - This area had lots of trouble at the start of the crop. High winds started the year and then hail followed.

They have received good rains the past 2 weeks. Irrigated fields (that didn't get hailed out) are just starting to bloom. Warm temps will help.

North, Northeast, East - After driving around this week, it's safe to say this is probably the best cotton in Tx. This is mostly irrigated, but even the dryland is looking very good. Cotton is knee high and full of squares. Major blooming should take place in the next week or so with warm weather.

Rainfall amounts have been from 1"-2.5" over the past 2 weeks. South, Southwest, West - This is a mixed bag. You have areas of dryland that are completely wiped out due to early season weather problems. Then you have areas of both dryland and irrigated that are in great shape and look just as good as last year.

I learned earlier that certification of acres for most of these counties has been pushed back until August 15 (normally it is around July 15). This means that the USDA won't have a good grasp on abandoned acres for quite a while. After driving around some this week, it is still hard to say what has been lost. 75% in some counties, while 50% in others.

It is really hit and miss. Regardless, production in these counties will be down substantially from last year. Valley - Farmers have begun harvesting. It has been slowed due to major rainfall. Quality will probably be affected some. Gins will start up next week in hopes of having more modules on their yards.

Corpus - Cotton is starting to open up. The rains that came over the past two weeks were a little too late to keep all of the bolls on though. It is reported that most fields will yield a little less than 1.5 bales/acre. Plants are not near as big as they were last year. Gins will probably start running the first week of August.
