Import prices of fibre spikes high

The textile and apparel industry of Vietnam experienced a strong hike in import price of fibre in the first five months of 2008. Prices have risen by an average of nearly 15.6 percent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.

For the month of June alone, import price of certain key fibre types stood as follows:-

• Price of polyester fibre - 1.2DX32 mm raw white semi – dull sourced from China was US $ 1,320 per ton, a rise of 16.8 percent compared to last year.

• Price of polyester fibre - LMT 4D*51mm imported from Korea was $ 1,840 per ton, up by 2.2 percent.

• Price of 100 percent polyester staple fiber 1.3DX38mm semi – dull grade A raw white imported from Thailand was $1,380 ton, up by 5.3 percent.

• Price of polyester fibre 1.4D x 38mm 'Nanlon' imported from Taiwan stood stably at $ 1,410 per ton.

The industry imported nearly 67,400 tons of fibre of all types for use in local production and spent some $110.9 million on these imports in the period between January and May, representing a year on year rise of 5.2 percent and 21.6 percent respectively.
