Burlington native Jerry Richardson, Jr. is a young man on a quest - tighten up his short game while paying his dues on the Tarheel and Nationwide tours, all in route to the ultimate prize - a PGA tour card. It's an ambitious plan that is being supported with a recently signed two-year sponsorship with Glen Raven, the makers of Sunbrella performance fabrics.

"Jerry has the potential to go all the way to the PGA tour as he's proven in college and in amateur competitions," said Allen E. Gant, Jr., president and CEO of Glen Raven, Inc. and chairman of this year's Wyndham Championship in Greensboro. "Our sponsorship is designed to help defray some of the costs of his being on tour so that he can focus on achieving his goal."

Richardson, 23, has been playing golf since the age of 10, encouraged by his parents, Jerry and Jodi Richardson of Burlington. His golfing resume is impressive, including winning the North Carolina State Amateur in 2005 and 2007, four-year letterman in men's golf at N.C. State and three-time club champion at the Alamance Country Club. Richardson has also been named to the N.C. Golf Hall of Fame.

"Sponsorship by Glen Raven and association with the Sunbrella brand mean a lot to me," said Richardson, who has been devoting his full attention to golf since earning a bachelor of science degree in business marketing from N.C. State in December. "I have given myself a three to four-year window to make the Nationwide Tour and then earn my PGA card."

Under the sponsorship agreement, Richardson will wear Sunbrella® and Glen Raven logoed golf shirts. He will also take part in corporate and customer events during the next two years, including support for Sunbrella fabrics, the nation's leading performance offering for awnings, marine and casual furniture.

In addition to the Glen Raven sponsorship, Richardson has a products sponsorship from Titleist which is helping support an aggressive schedule of playing in 19 of 20 events sponsored this year by the Tarheel Tour. The Tarheel Tour is an ideal proving ground for a young professional such as Richardson, including events in the Carolinas and Virginia.

"My focus is on my short game and course management," said Richardson, who missed a sectional qualifier for the U.S. Open last year by only one stroke. "I am focusing on getting up and down so that a bad round for me will be par."
