Handicraft expo to promote eco friendly products

As the entire world is embracing the Go green motto for making their products popular on a global level, Philippines based Misamis Oriental Multi-Fiber Cluster, Inc (MOMCI) is not far behind. MOMCI is an association of handicraft producers that constantly works for the development of this sector.

In an exclusive interview with Fibre2fashion, Ms Vivian Libao, President of MOMCI and Manager of Puyo Handicrafts stated, “We are using products like abaca fibre, cogon grass, flowers and leaves for creating beautiful handicraft items. Raw materials like abaca fibre also known as manila hemp, is being produced by the local farmers due to favourable climatic conditions.”

In order to make these environmental friendly hand made products popular among Filipino buyers, the Department of Trade and Industry will hold the Mindanao Island Fair, Kahimunan Mindanao 2008 for third time.

Ms Libao further informed, “The exhibition is scheduled from August 22 to 25 in The Atrium of the Limketkai Center Mall. Nearly 150 exhibitors from different regions are expected to participate here for showcasing an array of handicraft items, home décor products and bags. Approximately 5000 visitors are anticipated to come and take a look at some of the amazing creations which are crafted using eco friendly material.

“The organization is also planning to export its attractive range of products in overseas markets of Italy, New York and New Jersey, as the demand of eco friendly products is quite high in these countries.”

Libao has also urged the countryman to support and patronize the products made using abaca fibre, cogon grass, flowers and leaves for providing better livelihood to the craftsmen associated with the organization.

The Kahimunan Mindanao is one of the main events of Kagay-an Festival that is most eagerly awaited programmes.
