Mr KKSSR Ramachandran, Tamil Nadu Handloom Minister was quite confident when he asserted that the state had exported handloom textiles worth Rs9,000 million last year and the figures would expand by another 10 percent this year.

A review meeting was conducted on August 19 with nine district officials after which the Handloom Minister interacted with the media stating that Tamil Nadu stood first in the country with respect to handloom exports.

The minister further noted that total production of handloom textiles had touched Rs25,000 million per annum and of the Rs9,000 million worth of goods exported the contribution of the cooperative societies was around Rs3000 million.

Additionally, the State Government has decided to dole out Rs2600 million for distribution of 15.9 million saris and 15.8 million dhotis during the Pongal festival and producers have already been asked to maintain control over the quality.

Moreover, of the 18 cooperative spinning mills in Tamil Nadu, 13 were closed which left the state with only 5 operating units. In order to further develop the existing working mills and open up some of the closed mills, the Government has also formed an experts committee.

On the issue regarding the ongoing powerloom strike, it was revealed that no solution has emerged so far to the dispute between mill owners and workers. However, the minister was confident that he would manage to convince the owners for bringing the strike to an end.

Besides, the district powerloom workers union also submitted a memorandum to the handloom minister demanding an increase in wages on par with price hikes. They also plead for having a joint committee comprising officials from both state and centre to protect the sector.
