Janet Reed has joined Cotton Incorporated in the new position of Associate Director of Environmental Research, reporting to Kater Hake, Vice President of Agricultural Research.

At Cotton Incorporated, Reed will be the focal point for the Environmental Research program and will be charged with setting the record straight on cotton's environmental impact.

In doing so, she will assess all phases of cotton production and processing, and identify research opportunities which could benefit the bottom line for cotton.

Reed will also provide scientific outreach to retailers and represent the cotton production/manufacturing industry to the public at large.

Berrye Worsham, President and CEO of Cotton Incorporated, observes, “Janet Reed shares our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental improvement.

Cotton Incorporated has researched, developed and implemented practices to help cotton growers improve the quantity and quality of their yields, while decreasing their reliance on pesticides, energy and irrigation.

This work continues, and Janet will play an important role in furthering our research into how best to make the production of cotton truly sustainable.”

Reed was previously with Syngenta Biotechnology, Inc., having held positions in both the scientific and business realms, her most recent assignment being Regulatory Affairs Manager for Cotton Traits.

Before that, she was a Research Associate with Texas A & M University at the Texas A & M Experiment Station in Weslaco, Texas. She has also been a geneticist and plant biologist for Allied Corporation in Syracuse, New York.

Reed, a graduate of the University of Tennessee, has a Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture and a Master of Science degree in plant genetics, and has extensive experience in plant cell biology.

Her 25-year career in the agricultural biotechnology industry encompasses the full scope of trait commercialization starting from the development of gene transfer systems and their use in the production of genetically enhanced plant varieties, to coordination of regulatory studies and submission of data packages to regulatory agencies.

She has worked closely with U.S. and international scientists and with state and federal regulatory agencies, including the EPA, USDA and FDA in obtaining regulatory clearances for plant biotech products.

She is familiar with the regulatory processes of other countries and has completed several U.S. environmental law courses at Duke University.

As a researcher, Reed was a member of several professional organizations, such as the Society for In Vitro Biology (SIVB), the International Association for Plant Tissue Culture (IAPTC) and the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB).

As a regulatory manager, she was a member of the Global Industry Coalition (GIC), an industry group formed to support establishment of science-based regulatory frameworks for plant biotech products.

Cotton Incorporated, funded by U.S. growers of upland cotton and importers of cotton and cotton textile products, is the research and marketing company representing upland cotton. The Program is designed and operated to improve the demand for and profitability of cotton.
