SIMA appeals for relief packages to textile industry

• Restore rates of duty drawbacks to the pre-existing level, till the situation improves in the performance of textile industry.
• Provide two year moratorium for repayment loans and interest and also keep the units eligible for TUF subsidy for availing TUF loans.
• Restrict the minimum support price for cotton between 15 and 25 per cent on the rates prevailed during 2007-2008 as against the announcement of 47%.

If the textile mills carry out its operations under the present circumstances, SIMA Chief cautioned, it would result in best performing and marginal performing mills becoming sick and sick mills leading to total closure rendering several millions, including rural women folk, out of jobs. Therefore, he said textile industry expects a timely package.

Earlier at the first meeting of the Committee of SIMA held immediately after the 49th Annual General Body meeting at its premises on September 11, 2008, Dr K V Srinivasan, Managing Director, Premier Mills Private Limited and Sree Narasimha Textiles Private Limited, Coimbatore, has been unanimously re-elected as Chairman of the Association for the year 2008-2009.

He is a member of Research Advisory Committee and Managing Committee of SITRA, Chairman of Yarn & Thread Committee of TEXPROCIL, Mumbai, Special Invitee to the Council of Administration of TEXPROCIL and a member of the Sub-Committee for Europe of The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council.

Shri J Thulasidharan, Managing Director, The Rajaratna mills P Limited, Tamil Nadu, has been unanimously re-elected as Deputy Chairman of the Association for the year 2008-2009. Shri Thulasidharan was the Chairman of SIMA Cotton Development & Research Association and had made significant contributions for developing new cotton varieties, improving cotton production through SIMA as well as various State and Central Government projects. He is also a Director of Coimbatore Commodities Limited and Coimbatore Capital Limited.

Shri S.Dinakaran, Joint Managing Director of Sambandam Spinning Mills Limited, Salem, has been unanimously re-elected as Vice Chairman of the Association for the year 2008-2009. Shri Dinakaran is also a member in Confederation of Indian Textile Industry, New Delhi, a member in the Council of Administration, TEXPROCIL, Mumbai and also a member of the Yarn and Thread Committee in TEXPROCIL, Mumbai.
