Recently, Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) has coordinated with US General Embassy in Ho Chi Minh City to hold a workshop discussing new regulations for textile and garment products exported to US.

Apparently, it has been decided that fibres, fabrics and apparel products exported to US must meet the set regulations on flammability to avoid causing damage to users.

Besides, US has also set new rules for lead content of products. Up to February 2009, only knitting products that meet these regulations will be allowed to be exported to US.

Especially, Vietnam's exporting enterprises must gain report from a laboratory of international standards, stating that their products meet new standards. The US will announce the procedure of acknowledging a laboratory of international standards.

According to a top official of US Consumer Product Safety Commission, exporters to the US who violate new regulation will be fined a hefty amount for this offence. The fine imposed will mean loss of credibility. Additionally, the rejected goods will be destroyed in order to avoid re-exporting.
