One of the key problems that the silk cocoon farmers in Zhejiang province are facing is the significantly lowered prices this year.
Insiders reveal that in late-September the purchase rate of cocoon was in the range of 480-500 yuan per kilograms, which is almost 220 yuan lower than that in 2007.
Experts say that the demand has lowered since many silk enterprises have shifted to other businesses due to international trade turmoil.
Besides, the quality of cocoons is not very high this year, because of the uncertain weather.
Though, farmers are unhappy about the whole situation, unfortunately they are not in a position to control the prices. Authorities advise more efforts should be put in for marketing as well as raising the quality of cocoon to earn more profits.
