RadiciGroup presents latest innovation at Dornbirn MMF Congress

With over 700 participants hailing from 30 different countries and a record number of visitors, the 47th Dornbirn Man-Made Fibers Congress held in Austria from 17 to 19 September 2008 proved that the event was the foremost international forum in the sector.

As a result of increasing globalization, the fibres market has seen the Asian share of total worldwide synthetic fibres production grow from 28% in 1990 to about 76%. In 1990 Western Europe contributed 18% of world synthetic fibres production, but its share does not even reach 7%.

Marked by a drop in production, 2007 was a difficult period for the European man-made fibres industry. This year the troubles are not yet over, given the great instability in target markets.

The 100 lectures presented at the Dornbirn symposium dealt with six main topics: new developments in fibres (sustainability), sportswear (elastic/bioactive), safety, technical textiles, nonwovens and EU research projects.

RadiciGroup, represented by Filippo Bona of RadiciGroup-Radyarn R&D, detailed its innovative developments and achievements in synthetic fibres production: from UV protective skin-core polyester yarn (SunShield) to nanotechnology-based bacteriostatic synthetic fibre (Nanofeel), two-component polyester/polyamide yarn (Micralon) and solution-dyed polyester yarn (Starlight Colours). Starlight Colours specialty yarn was the focus of Mr. Bona's talk.

“The product we have developed, Starlight UV Guard,” said Mr. Bona, “is high performance yarn specifically designed for the outdoor furnishings market.

This sector, which requires innovative fabrics with high performance features, is very promising for us. The market no longer calls for just acrylic fibres but also polyester products.”

“It's commonly thought that polyester fabric offers less resistance compared to acrylic,” Mr. Bona continued. “In fact, it is well known that the mechanical properties of traditional polyester degrade faster than those of acrylic when the fibres are exposed to UV rays, as a consequence of the weakening of the polymer chains.

This is true for traditional polyester. However, the product we have developed is solution-dyed polyester yarn that ensures excellent colourfastness, UV protection, mechanical resistance and elasticity.

The yarn is available in a vast range of colours and counts and, thanks to our production versatility, we are able to offer a minimum quantity (200 kg) for each colour.”

“In the future,” said RadiciGroup-Radyarn Marketing Manager Andrea Borgis, “we plan to expand the Starlight UV Guard colour range and improve its performance so as to offer our customers a truly innovative product.
