Relief package for handloom weavers of Andhra Pradesh

The once thriving handloom industry in Andhra Pradesh in India is going through tough and troubled times in the last few years. To mitigate their troubles government of Andhra Pradesh announced a series of measures.

The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh visited Sircilla in Karimnagar district which is the worst affected. He assured the handloom weavers of full support from the government. Among the series of relief packages is a loan up to Rupees 50,000 at a nominal interest of 3 percent per annum.

He added by saying that this loan will be extended to powerloom workers of the region too. He also announced some other welfare policies including providing grains at subsidized rates and also a scheme that will provide employment to 5,000 youth of the region.

Recently a group representing the interests of the handloom weavers of Sircilla had met the Chief Minister and requested for providing relief to the handloom weavers by declaring Sircilla as a textile Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
