Border trade to bring windfall to handicraft industry in Kashmir

The rupee 20 billion handicraft industry in Kashmir, India is expected to land a windfall, considering the keen interest shown by the nineteen member trade delegation from neighbouring Pakistan.

The delegation visited the office of the state Handicraft Corporation which has a chain of outlets across India. Out of the twenty one products shortlisted from the state for exports to Pakistan, nearly 50 percent of the goods or 10 items are from the handicraft sector.

Nearly 350,000 artisans, over 100,000 traders and about 350 exporters are associated with the sector in the state. The quality and price of handicraft goods are better than those manufactured in other places.

Amongst the list of handicrafts products included for export across the border are shawls, carpets, rugs, crewel, furniture etc. The region exports rupee 15 billion of handicrafts annually of which carpets alone account for rupee 7 billion. Handicraft sector is highest earner of foreign currency for the state.
