World Rural Women's Day was celebrated on October 15 this year and Fiji marked this day with a unique move.
The Ministry's Department of Women set up appropriate outlets, so that rural women could sell their handicrafts to a wide range of consumers. These shops were organized for two days, ending today.
Experts said that it was important to pay attention to rural women, who are capable of contributing a lot to the national economy.
Though such souks were helpful, the advisers say that educating and training these women was more necessary.
World Rural Women's Day was launched by several international NGOs during the 4th United Nations World Conference on Women in Beijing 1995. This event reminds the countries of such women and urges them to make efforts to lift up this section of the society.
