Over the last few months, Riverina Wool Combing Pty Ltd (RWC) has been severely challenged by a major slowdown in the wool industry and by a very strong Australian dollar. Furthermore, the worldwide financial crisis has impacted the wool market with only few orders available.
“The decision was made to stop the top making plant here in Wagga and to concentrate only on the production of scoured wool. 16 employees have been made redundant,” told Mr Manuel Adriaenssens, Manufacturing Manager, Riverina Wool Combing Pty Ltd, to Fibre2fashion.com.
RWC has been produced scoured wool and Tops over the last few years. The volume of greasy wool expected to be processed in 2009 will be higher than the one of 2008.
Countering the textiles union's claim that the company plans to relocate the work in order to save the cost, Mr Adriaenssens, said that the machines were not moving to China.
