Malabar Crafts Mela plans open today, to replicate Surajkund

The Malabar Crafts Mela at Kottakunnu, Kerala begins from today. It is organised as part of the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival and will try to replicate the famous Surajkund Crafts Fair. It will be inaugurated by the Tourism Minister Mr. Balakrishnan.

Over 200 artisans from various states have set up stalls and will display their skills in handicrafts and handlooms. The government on its part is trying to create a national branding to the Malabar Crafts Fair by bringing traditional crafts persons from different parts of the country.

The fair has on display products made by artisans, craftsmen and artists of national repute. The other motto of the organiser is to repeat the success of the famous Surajkund Crafts Fair which has artisans from SAARC countries participating in it.

The fair will be held in 100 huts made of bamboo and palm leaves using the traditional expertise of the forest dwellers. Artisans, craftsmen, diamond cutters, metal workers, sculptors, and handloom weavers from across the country will take part in the fair.

The first Malabar Crafts Fair was held in 2007 and egged with its success the government has targeted to attract visitors in excess of 125,000 people.
