Import prices of cotton & polyester yarn in free fall mode

In the week ending January 2, 2009 the import price of cotton continued to decline continuously and fell to between US $1,080-1,560 per ton. Specifically, import price from US was $1,498 per ton, down 6.6 percent over previous week. Enterprises increased the import of cotton from Tanzania at a price of $1,466 per ton down 2.8 percent over previous week.

Cotton import prices from Ivory Coast sharply decreased by 11.8 percent compared to the previous week to settle at $1,400 per ton. Vietnam imported cotton from Pakistan and France respectively at $1,200 per ton and $1,470 per ton respectively down 10.3 percent and 15.5 percent compared to same period of 2008.

Following the trends set by cotton prices, prices of polyester yarn also declined in all markets due to low demand at $0.99-1.85 per kg of different deniers. Vietnam imported this product from Malaysia at $1.12 per kg, a fall of 9 percent over the previous week, while the same was imported from Taiwan and Indonesia at $1.26 per kg and $1.85 per kg respectively. Import price of polyester yarn from Thailand also fell sharply to $0.99 per kg.
