Recently, the “High Cotton” awards for 2009 were presented at the Beltwide Cotton Conference in Texas, which are sponsored by the Farm Press Publication and the Cotton Foundation. The High Cotton award was envisioned to recognise the efforts of cotton farmers who grow good quality cotton with exceptionally high yields, with environmentally safe practices.

The awards are presented to each individual cotton growing regions. James Dodson from Robstown, Texas was presented the award for the Southwest West States, Danny Locke of Firebaugh, California for the Western states, Mike Tate from the Southeast and Jason Humboldt for the Mid-South states.

James Dudson on winning the award said, “Times are tough in the cotton industry, but cotton producers have overcome challenges in the past and can do so again if they will stick together.” He was also grateful to his whole family and friends, without whose help he said, would not have been possible to win this coveted award.

Larry McClendon, Chairman of the national Cotton Council and himself a farmer and ginner from Arkansas said that he believes that good environmental practices have helped increase the viability of the award winners and it is not possible to maintain a profitable farm by constantly exploiting natural resources.
