The Malaysian textile and garment has had a glorious past. But in the last few years, government apathy along with rising costs and loosing the competitive edge has led to the industry deteriorating with each passing year and is just a plain shadow of its past glory.

Many have likened the textile and garment industry to a sunset sector. Experts say that the sector should be promoted by the government and the industry can be easily brought back on the rails if corrective actions are taken up immediately by the government.

Only one company from the entire gamut of textile companies is participating in Heimtextil trade fair in Germany, the biggest global fair for home textiles, though there are huge number of exhibitors from other countries like Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore.

Heimtextil is one its kind fair, where worldwide home textile manufacturers prefer to feature their products, as visitors and buyers from across the globe visit the fair. In these difficult times it would have been a golden opportunity for Malaysian manufactures to present their products in front of an international audience.

This fair also presented an opening to the home textiles producers to directly deal with global buyers and position themselves for the next round of boom as and when the recessionary trends get over. The organizers of the fair are also surprised at the low key participation from Malaysia.
