The textile and garment industry has surpassed crude oil in terms of export turnover with the value amounting to US $550 million in the first month of 2009. However, according to Mr. Pham Xuan Hong, deputy chairman of Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), the industry's export value was $180 million lower than that in the same period of 2008.

The footwear industry also started well by shipping goods worth $350 million in January 2009. Mr. Nguyen Duc Thuan, President of Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association said, this export turnover was achieved, thanks mainly, due to orders from old contracts received in 2008.

Totally, the two industries brought in nearly $1 billion in export value. In the coming months and years, the textile, garment and footwear sectors are reckoned to be the flagship industries in earning foreign exchange for the country.
