A handloom expo “Harshakala” sponsored by the Ministry of Textiles, Karnataka, was inaugurated by the Minster of Textiles, Mr Shekar. This trade fair has been organised with the express purpose of carving a niche market for handloom products for the benefit of the poor weavers, who hail from mainly rural back grounds.
Around 113 stalls have been set up, displaying handlooms products of different states like Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh etc, with the theme titled “Confluence of Traditional Weaves”. Latest designs, contemporary trends and an array of colour combinations of handloom dress material are on display.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Shekar said, “These types of fairs provide an opportunity to handloom weavers from across the country to display their skills as well as provide remunerative prices for their products, along with providing them the much needed exposure and employment”.
He added by saying that, the government is planning to start a training scheme, which will provide training to over 25,000 un-employed youth, along with providing them a stipend of Rs 2,000 to help them tide over the current recessionary trends, under the textile policy.
